For its tank-mixability, residual control and flexible re-cropping options, imazamox has become the go-to active for many pea and soybean growers looking for a first line of defense against broadleaf and grassy weeds. If you’re considering adding it to your 2018 weed management plan, here’s what you need to know.

Mode of action

Imazamox is a member of the imidazolinone family, a series of Group 2 actives that inhibit the enzyme ALS (acetolactate synthase). When absorbed by roots and foliage, imazamox moves to growing points within the plant to block ALS production. This prevents the protein synthesis and cell division necessary for plant growth, essentially starving weeds to death.

Effective control of broadleaf and grassy weeds

If applied according to label recommendations, imazamox will control the following:

Grassy Weeds

  • Barnyard grass
  • Green foxtail
  • Japanese brome grass1
  • Persian darnel
  • Volunteer barley
  • Volunteer canary seed
  • Volunteer wheat
  • Volunteer oats
  • Wild oats
  • Yellow foxtail

Residual weed control

In addition to controlling established weeds, imazamox can also provide residual weed control. This typically works on shallow-germinating weeds like the Brassica species: stinkweed, shepherd’s purse and volunteer canola (non-Clearfield® varieties).

If you’re hoping for residual control, adequate soil moisture before and after spraying is key. Otherwise, imazamox will struggle to move up into the root zone of problem weeds.

What to expect after spraying

It’s important to know that imazamox is a relatively slow-working herbicide. Although weeds stop growing within 24 to 48 hours after spraying, injury symptoms don’t typically show for several days, and it can take up to three weeks for treated weeds to die.

During that period, you may notice symptoms such as:

  • Growing point death
  • Interveinal chlorosis (yellow striping on grasses especially)
  • Reddening or purpling of leaves
  • Browned leaf margins
  • Dark red stems with lesions and cracks

Symptoms are usually minimal on leaves that are fully expanded prior to exposure, but they may appear wilted, crinkled and yellowish. Leaves that develop after treatment may look chlorotic, crinkled, stunted and distorted.
