Practical, cost-effective solutions deliver for grape growers

Grape growers are wanting to address typical challenges with efficiency and cost-effective solutions to get the job done. Fortunately, ADAMA Australia’s extensive crop protection range for the sector has expanded further to do just that.

IT’S a difficult time for growers in the wine and table grape industry, and, as a result, they are seeking cost-effective, practical solutions they can trust, backed by quality support, to address the typical challenges they face from season to season.

ADAMA Australia has one of the most extensive crop protection ranges for grape production and it has been further buoyed in recent times by the addition of new products for growers, effectively protecting crops from budburst to harvest and helping to maximise yield and quality.

Daniel Polson, Market Development Manager - Horticulture with ADAMA Australia, said the company’s acute understanding of the challenges grape growers faced and years of working closely with them to develop solutions had provided the foundations for its crop solutions portfolio.

“We’ve worked in conjunction with viticulture agronomists and growers to specifically understand their issues and we’ve worked hard to develop products that help deliver the best bang for buck for them,” Daniel said.

Added to the range recently, the unique and highly cost-effective, multi-site fungicide, Folpan® 800 WG has been strongly welcomed by growers. It targets downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis, with control of phomopsis also now on the label.

Daniel said it had been several decades since an alternate multi-site fungicide had become available in Australia. He said some multi-site molecules had been banned in the European Union and other export markets, while others remained under review, which would limit the multi-site fungicide options available for Australian producers into the future.

Containing folpet as the active ingredient, Folpan is a Group M04 broadspectrum fungicide that is widely used around the world for its minimal impact on beneficial insects, plus its ability to prevent the build-up of resistance of fungal strains to single-site mode of action fungicide groups.

Folpan is a protectant cover spray for downy mildew and phomopsis preventative programs and has excellent compatibility with other multi-site groups as well as single mode of action, systemic partner fungicides. It also offers growers an alternate, supporting mode of action for their botrytis and powdery mildew programs.

A highly suitable systemic partner fungicide is Axiom® Flexi, one of the most powerful and flexible, eradicant fungicides available against downy mildew in grapes.

Daniel said containing the active ingredient metalaxyl-m, Axiom Flexi was an ideal partner fungicide for use in resistance management programs and had established itself quickly in the market due to its easy-to-use liquid formulation and excellent compatibility with protectant tank partners.

Meanwhile, ADAMA Australia also recently released Actavan® Bio, an exciting new mode of action biological fungicide that enhances vines’ genetic defence process and targets berry split. This suppresses botrytis infection while ensuring zero residues for wine and table grape production.

Daniel said the biological fungicide, comprising glycine betaine, helped growers fight-off botrytis infection late in seasons by increasing skin elasticity and reducing berry skin degradation and split, which provided infection sites for botrytis. He commented that Actavan Bio was a strong “osmoprotector”, managing water loss and uptake across the cellular profile.
