Maintaining Community Bonds in Torrington
It’s life’s little surprises that are often the sweetest, and in late April the board of the Torrington & District Agricultural Society was the recipient of some delightful news from one of their newest board members.
“Jordon Sorensen works at Core Ag Input Centre here in Torrington and through that knew about the Stomping Grounds program and applied for the grant but didn’t mention it until she found out we had been accepted,” says Alisa Kolenosky, president of the Ag Society. “I guess she didn’t want to get our hopes up, but it sure was a pleasant surprise when we found out we were selected.”
“We’re a pretty small community, there’s not a whole lot really close by so the arena ends up being the place people go to just to connect and to increase well being,” says Kolenosky, “I think without the arena in our community there would be fewer connections. People would be a little lonelier without it.”
Michelle Brown, an Area Business Manager with ADAMA Canada met Kolenosky and some of the team from Core Ag Inputs in late May to deliver the “cheque” and find out more about their plans for ADAMA’s $5,000 grant.
“Stomping Grounds is pretty open ended as far as how the funds get used – just as long as it is for a project or program that benefits the community,” says Brown, “In this case they plan to use it for general maintenance, which I think any organization that is responsible for maintaining a public facility can agree the list is always long and the funds are always short.”
Kolenosky says that people keep connected through the arena, and they’re so pleased to receive funding from the Stomping Grounds grant that will be put towards keeping this space available to the community for years to come.
“Our arena provides space for a much wider community than just Torrington, and we want to provide an affordable place for kids to come and play and engage in sports,” says Kolenosky. “I think people would actually be surprised by how much goes on there though. From family reunions to foot care clinics, it's really quite the hub of a variety of activities.”
