Renovation Renews Kinistino Sports Complex

ADAMA Canada invests $7,500 in major upgrade and addition to community hub.

With time ticking on an over forty-year-old ice plant, the community of Kinistino, Sask., embarked on a mission to replace it and in doing so uncovered an opportunity to give the community’s baseball players a place to go as well.

“While replacing the ice plant we had to put in a new room for the Zamboni and then we decided to add bathrooms with access from the outside for the Kinistino Minor Ball Association to use with their newly renovated ball diamond next door,” says Trevor Wilton, vice-president of the Kinistino Sports Complex board.

“They've done a really good job with that, and we thought if we can help out with some washrooms right next door that'll be awesome,” he says. “The rink is kind of the hub of any small town in the winter and with this renovation and the new ball diamond there will be activities for kids to do all year round.”

The total project, with a budget of $1.3 million and over three years in the making, is close to wrapping up but the fundraising will continue even after the first skates hit the new ice this fall.

“The town put up a portion of the money to complete the project, because if the ice plant ever went down that would be a major blow for our community, and so we still have to raise funds to pay that back,” says Wilton.

Stomping Grounds

Last fall, the board learned of ADAMA Canada’s Stomping Grounds community investment initiative through the team at Cay’s Seeds and submitted their project for consideration. In April they were pleased to be notified that their project was selected for a $7,500 investment.

The Kinistino Sports Complex is one of 23 community projects from across Canada that received funding from ADAMA Canada this year. Since 2018, the company has contributed over half a million dollars to building stronger communities, boosting well-being, and sparking hometown pride.

Jordan Wolkowski, Northeast Saskatchewan Area Business Manager with ADAMA Canada, had the honour of personally delivering the cheque to the Sports Complex and was treated to a tour of the nearly completed project.

“It was really neat to see how the whole project has come together and how, through the ice plant renovation, they were also able to add washrooms for the new ball diamonds,” says Wolkowski.

“Growing up on a farm, I saw firsthand how rural communities come together to support one another,” he says. “I also appreciate how hard it can be for small towns to find the funding to keep things like rinks going. It was a great feeling, seeing how ADAMA’s investment was being put to such good use.”

For his part, Wilton appreciates the initiative’s focus on supporting rural communities.

“Kinistino is an agriculture community, and many of us are ADAMA customers. So, to have a company like them show up and give a little bit back to these community projects is awesome,” he says.
