Fall Is Prime Time to Target Weeds
By: Marci LeBlanc, TSA

Fall showers have stubble fields greening up — not just with volunteer(s), but also with a flush of weeds, including perennial broadleaves. While the presence of perennial weeds isn't ideal, fall is one of the best times to go after them.
As the season winds down, perennial & winter annual weeds shift into a phase where they begin storing energy in their root systems to survive winter and regrow next spring. This makes them more vulnerable to systemic herbicides — products that move within the plant and target growing points, including underground tissues. When timed right, fall herbicide applications can significantly reduce next year's weed pressure.
One strong tank-mix partner for fall burndown is PRIORITY® HL, a Group 2 herbicide containing Florasulam. While PRIORITY® HL is primarily designed to control annual broadleaf weeds, it plays a valuable role in fall applications by adding an alternative mode of action when tank-mixed with Glyphosate.
Key Benefits of PRIORITY® HL:
- Group 2 (ALS inhibitor) mode of action: inhibits the production of the ALS enzyme, quickly causing plants to stop growing and become discolored (red, yellow, purple) at the growing point and spreading to the entire plant within 1-3 weeks*.
- Designed for pre-seed or post-harvest applications: Ideal for fall or early spring fieldwork.
- Tank-mix compatible with glyphosate: Boosts the spectrum and improves control of key broadleaf weeds.
- Rainfast in 30 minutes: Reliable performance, even in unpredictable fall weather.
- Crop-safe rotation: Applications after August 1 restrict next crops to cereals or fallow.
*If group 2 resistant, there will be no control.
PRIORITY® HL is not intended as a standalone solution for fall weed control - and for best results should be tank mixed with Glyphosate.
However, on its own it is effective on a range of tough annual broadleaves, including:
- Chickweed
- Wild Buckwheat
- Cleavers
- Wild Mustard
- Stinkweed
- Shepherd’s Purse
- Volunteer Canola (non-Clearfield)
The Glyphosate component provides systemic action on deep-rooted species, while PRIORITY® HL improves activity on small-seeded annuals and hard-to-control broadleaves. See the PRIORITY® HL product page for the tech sheet, product label, and a complete list of weeds controlled.
Fall Application Tips
- Timing: Apply after harvest and before a killing frost, while weeds are still green and active.
- Tank-mix: Use with Glyphosate for broader weed spectrum.
- Water volume: 5–10 gallons per acre (ground application only).
- Rotation flexibility: After August 1 - limits next year’s crop rotation to cereals or summer fallow.
While PRIORITY® HL is not a silver bullet for perennial weeds, it’s an excellent tool to strengthen your fall weed control program, especially when used with Glyphosate. Getting ahead of weed pressure now helps ensure cleaner fields and a stronger start to next season — and in today’s weed-resistance landscape, every mode of action counts.
