Persistent Focus can be the Path to Victory
Cornie Thiessen, General Manager
The aggressive tones by the Trump administration and the Chinese government against Canada has created a great deal of anxiety and a wide range of suggested policy responses. Some have argued for aggressive retaliations, while others have pushed for conciliatory approaches.
The latter approaches tend to be based on the recognition that the US and China are dramatically bigger than Canada and therefore we stand little chance of success. While the size and ‘power’ differences between us and them are undeniable, it’s worth noting the historical phenomenon of ‘asymmetrical conflict’ that often sees the little guy beat the big guy.
The US is no stranger to this notion, after all they were the successful ‘little guy’ in their Revolutionary War, and they were the unsuccessful ‘big guy’ in the Vietnam War and in the Afghanistan War. This phenomenon is also evident in business where often a small upstart outcompetes a larger player.
Many factors contribute to these unexpected outcomes; but a key one is focus. Often the ‘big guy’ can only dedicate a small percent of their time to the conflict, but the ‘small guy’ has no choice but to focus fully on the conflict. Persistent focus has served Canada well in past conflicts, with luck we can once again turn conflict into profitable peace.

Neelan Edbom, National Sales Manager
Neelan has a passion for bringing Ag to people, and for the last 5 years as ADAMA Canada’s National Sales Manager, he’s focused on working with his sales team to not only deliver the best in crop protection to farmers, but to help communicate the importance of innovation in ag.
His passion for agriculture started young, on his family farm, where he learned firsthand how much hard work went into growing the food we eat, and that hard work has always felt rewarding. His drive to connect with people over agriculture has served him well over a long career and has earned him relationships with farmers that have lasted over 25 years!
His career has kept him on the road, and over the years Neelan has acquired a real appreciation for Canadian landscapes and the people who call them home. One day he’d like to travel coast to coast, taking in all the diversity that Canada has to offer.
