Major Breakthrough in Fungicides

June 2025 Issue - ADAMA Delivers

A new mode of action for fighting disease.
Major Breakthrough in Fungicides

New Mode, New Era of Disease Control

As disease resistance to traditional chemistries continues to grow, we are thrilled to announce we are trialing a novel fungicide that represents a major breakthrough in crop protection.

Recently assigned to FRAC Group 32, this innovative mode of action targets nucleic acid metabolism — a biochemical pathway never before used in fungicides — to deliver effective protection against key diseases in cereals, pulses and canola.

As resistance challenges increase, this new mode of action holds exciting potential and continued collaboration among regulators, researchers and the agricultural industry will be key to bringing this innovation to Canadian fields and securing long-term crop health and productivity.

Trials are underway across Canada, both as a standalone and in combination with other active ingredients, and this new Group 32 fungicide is expected to receive approval in Great Britain in 2027 and in the EU in 2029.

Jordan Wolkowski, Area Business Manager

While he knows how to drive a tractor and combine — he grew up on a farm, after all — it wasn’t operating heavy machinery that drew him to a career in agriculture. It was the people.

“I’ve made so many great connections in this industry. They continually remind me why I’m passionate about agriculture,” says Jordan, who recently joined ADAMA Canada as an Area Business Manager for Northeast Saskatchewan.

In his new role, Jordan is looking forward to helping farmers get more value from every acre as he’s especially passionate about helping family farms thrive for generations to come. “The financial burden of taking over a farm can deter a lot of young people. I’d love to see more family farms passed down,” he says.

When not working with growers, you’ll likely find Jordan cycling or mountain biking — a hobby he picked up while living in sunny California. We’re excited to have him on the ADAMA Team!

Gear Up, Spray Safe

As spraying season kicks into gear, it’s time to double down on safety. Here are some key practices from Manitoba Agriculture to help keep you and your crew safe while protecting your crops:

- Plan ahead: Read product labels carefully and plan your spray application when wind is calm and temperatures are moderate.
- Suit up: Wear the right personal protective equipment (PPE) for each product and replace any damaged gear.
- Apply safely: Don’t eat, drink, or smoke when handling pesticides, and wash thoroughly after every job (and don’t forget to do the same before bathroom breaks too!)
- Be prepared: Have soap, water, and a towel available. Should concentrated product spill on skin, hands, face, or eyes, wash immediately.
- Clean up properly: Triple-rinse containers, store chemicals securely, and follow disposal guidelines.
