Oilseed Rape

Out-FOXing charlock in oilseed rape

Charlock (Sinapis arvensis) has rapidly become one of the most difficult to control broad-leaved weeds, not just in cereals, but also in brassicas. Its highly competitive nature makes it especially difficult to control in winter oilseed rape, with many growers turning to more competitive hybrid varieties to compensate for a lack of available herbicide options.
Oilseed Rape

Although they are a useful tool, some hybrids often come with a yield penalty of as much as 15% compared to other varieties. Likewise, some hybrids don’t offer the same level of disease resistance compared to other options.

AN ALTERNATIVE WEED CONTROL OPTION

The recent approval for the use of FOX® (bifenox 480 g/l) in winter oilseed rape (WOSR) gives growers with a severe charlock problem a new way of controlling this difficult weed, enabling them to choose from a much wider array of varieties based on yield potential, disease resistance and cost.

FOX APPEAL

FOX® (bifenox 480 g/l) is classified as a Group 14 herbicide which inhibits the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase, an essential element in the synthesis of chlorophyll.

By disrupting the synthesis of chlorophyll, this novel mode of action for OSR provides good control not only of charlock, but also of other problem weeds such as Poppy and Common Field Speedwell and many more.

FOX® has a wide application window up to BBCH 19 (up to the end of leaf development) which means it can deliver good control even if it is applied when weeds aren’t actively growing.

FINANCIAL ADVANTAGES

In addition to allowing growers to select their variety of choice and to unlock their land’s true OSR yield potential, the approval of FOX® in OSR also offers several financial advantages over alternative methods of controlling broad-leaved weeds.

For example, conventional and ‘regular’ hybrid varieties are significantly cheaper than other hybrid options, and FOX® is significantly cheaper than herbicides designed specifically to work with hybrids.
