ANTHEM® sings an easy song for weed control in maize

With soil temperatures gradually rising across the UK, seed drills have been hard at work getting this year’s maize crops into the ground. That means sprayers won’t be too far behind, with pre-emergence herbicides being applied to keep the new crops weed and competition free.

For pre-emergence weed control products to work effectively, it is widely accepted that adequate soil moisture is needed for the residual active to be taken up by the target weeds. A few weeks ago, that didn’t seem like a problem any of us would be too worried about this year, with the wet winter ensuring most soil types were still well watered.

However, despite localised showers, plus the odd storm here and there, some drier soils are now edging towards needing a little rain to keep the dust down. Where this is the case, it’s worth remembering that some active ingredients will become less effective at controlling weed species which germinate from depth.

In dry conditions it is therefore prudent to use an SC (suspension concentrate) formulation as evidence suggests that these are more readily taken up than their CS (capsule suspension) counterparts.

For growers currently using pendimethalin, and those who want to introduce a non-ALS inhibiting mode of action (to target annual meadowgrass and broad-leaved weeds such as poppy, or where ALS resistance has been confirmed) ANTHEM® (400 g/L pendimethalin in an SC formulation) offers a distinct advantage over rival CS formulations. As the graphs below illustrate, ANTHEM® achieves better consistency in terms of product uptake compared to CS products.

ANTHEM® (400 g/L pendimethalin) is a long-lasting and reliable residual herbicide which provides a good foundation in weed control programmes to target tough grass and broad-leaved weeds. ANTHEM®offers four key benefits:

  • SC formulation enhances uptake in drying conditions
  • Non-ALS mode of action
  • Broad spectrum weed control (inc. ALS-resistant species)
  • Easy to pour, rinse and clean
