Young emerging wheat plants

Can you afford to skip protection at T0?

With a large proportion of this year’s wheat crops going into the ground early, and the wet, predominantly mild winter driving disease pressure to an alarmingly high level, growers and agronomists are currently considering whether to apply a T0 fungicide treatment, and if so, which active ingredients should be used.

In many situations this season, the question of whether a T0 treatment may be beneficial is becoming clearer, as reports from across the UK have already confirmed early symptoms of septoria and rust in a high proportion of crops. Where these symptoms have been noted, or where crops are being grown in a high-risk scenario (for example a susceptible variety that was sown early) , the best strategy for keeping ahead of disease is to apply protection before spores have had a chance to move up the developing plant.

This season, the best form of attack is defence! This means applying a fungicide treatment at T0.

Start clean with T0 protection

In circumstances where septoria is the primary driver for a T0 treatment, ARIZONA® (500 g/l folpet) is the ideal option: this proven multi-site fungicide can be used either as a standalone product to protect against septoria or as a tank mix partner with other modes of action.

Including ARIZONA® (500 g/l folpet) at the T0 timing is recommended in the following situations:

  • A standalone application of ARIZONA® can be used to protect Leaf 4 against septoria.
  • Where there is an additional threat of rust, ARIZONA® should be used in conjunction with a strobilurin
  • If active rust is present in the crop, ARIZONA® should be used alongside an appropriate azole to provide the best levels of control.

In all these scenarios, using ARIZONA® (500 g/l folpet) at T0 will provide peace of mind by ensuring crops have been protected if/when subsequent T1 applications are delayed.

Key benefits of ARIZONA® at T0

  • Provides contact protection against septoria to safeguard new growth
  • Acts on spore gemination and re-sporulation to reduce disease movement up through the canopy
  • ARIZONA’s multi-site mode of action supports resistance management and helps to protect the longevity of partner products
  • ARIZONA® doesn’t interfere with the curative kickback activity of partner products
  • Adds useful early protection against yellow and brown rust as well as intrinsic activity against mildew (for rust control, always use ARIZONA® in mixture with a rust active partner)
  • ARIZONA® delivers a reliable return on investment by extending green leaf area duration, resulting in higher yields and enhanced crop quality.

Don’t leave yield behind

Applying ARIZONA® at T0 has been proven to deliver significant improvements in terms of crop yield. In the following example, using ARIZONA® as a tank mix partner alongside Univoq lifted yields by 0.48 t/ha compared to the same programme without a T0 treatment, and by 0.58 t/ha compared to the standard programme without ARIZONA® at any timings.

In the following scenario, including ARIZONA® at T0 added an additional 0.22 t/ha compared to its inclusion only at T1 and T2, and lifted yields by 0.44 t/ha compared to the core fungicide programme without any ARIZONA® at any timing.
