Ramularia on winter barley

Managing an elevated ramularia threat at T2

Protecting the green leaf area and photosynthetic potential of at-risk crops
Ramularia on winter barley

With dry conditions affecting large swathes of the UK, and the long-range weather forecast offering little hope of imminent respite, spring barley crops are in danger of becoming significantly stressed due to a lack of soil moisture. Crops will therefore be more susceptible to ramularia lesions developing from within infected plants and could also be more prone to abiotic spotting as a result of reduced nutrient uptake due to the lack of available moisture. In both cases, the green leaf area and photosynthetic potential of crops will be compromised, putting final yields and grain quality at risk.

Growers should therefore consider how best to protect crops at T2 to keep the developing canopy greener for longer.

The only effective way of protecting green leaf area and duration is to protect crops before ramularia lesions develop. Therefore, because of increasing resistance to azole, strobilurin and SDHI active ingredients which has made these modes of action less effective against ramularia, ARIZONA® (500 g/l folpet) should be used at T2 (GS39-49) when it has been proven to provide effective protection against not just ramularia, but also net blotch and rhynchosporium.

Including ARIZONA® at the T2 timing will therefore help to protect the upper leaves and minimise spikelet mortality and will also deliver a good return on investment by prolonging the crop’s green canopy duration.

SAFEGUARDING NEW CHEMISTRY

The inclusion of ARIZONA® at T2 also plays an important role in protecting new chemistries such as adepidyn from the threat of resistance: ARIZONA® is the only multi-site fungicide to have been proven to delay the development of resistance to single site active ingredients and should therefore be used not only to prevent ramularia lesions from developing, but also to extend the effective lifetime of this important SDHI fungicide.

ARIZONA® for added protection

Including ARIZONA® (500 g/l folpet) at T2 alongside single site active ingredients delivers a reliable return on investment by delivering the following benefits:

  • Enhances disease control by providing additional activity against ramularia, net blotch and rhynchosporium
  • Works with partner products to boost disease control
  • Protects the upper leaves
  • Minimises spikelet mortality
  • Prolongs green leaf area and duration
  • Increases the final number of grains per ear
  • Increases dry matter available for grain filling and increases grain storage capacity for a higher thousand grain weight (TGW)
  • Protects the quality of high value crops destined for the malting market.
